If you decide to challenge your solicitor’s costs or the costs of the other side, a request form (N258C) will need to be filled in. If the court gives permission for detailed assessment to take place, the party whose bill is being challenged will need to make the application for detailed assessment. They will have to pay a court fee, dependent on the size of the costs being assessed.
Amount of costs Court Fee
£15,000 or less - £335
£15,000.01 to £50,000 - £675
£50,000.01 to £100,000 - £1,005
£100,000.01 to £150,000 - £1,345
£150,000.01 to £200,000 - £1,680
£200,000.01 to £300,000 - £2,520
£300,000.01 to £500,000 - £4,200
£500,000.01 or more - £5,600
However, if the court decides the costs are reasonable, or do not reduce them by more than 20%, you could end up being liable for the court fee, the other side’s costs of the detailed assessment, your own costs of the detailed assessment, plus the cost of the original bill.
